8/17/08: Attention: Parents, Coaches and all 8th Grade Wrestlers
In September, all 8th grade boys and girls will have the option to register for admission through the 2009-2010 High School Selection process. We encourage all 8th graders who participated in the Middle School Program to continue wrestling with one of the 58 High School Teams. Read more.
7/30/08: Future Leaders of America: 42 New York City Wrestlers Participate in a Leadership Development Program
42 New York City Wrestlers from 20 different NYC high schools are currently participating in a leadership development program designed by University of Minnesota Wrestling Head Coach J. Robinson. The program is being run at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR. It began on Sunday, July 27 and goes until August 9th. Read more.

6/19/08: New Weekly Update
Busloads of wrestlers from New York City's Beat the Streets Wrestling Program will be attending the Bruce Baumgartner Wrestling Camp in July.  Mike Cigala, Executive Director, has organized a large contingent mostly from Brooklyn High and Middle Schools to spend a week being inspired and motivated by one of America's most decorated athletes. 6/4/08: New York City Public School System Will Become the First City or State to Sponsor a Freestyle and Greco-Roman Season
Mike Novogratz, Chairman of the Board, announced at the Annual Beat the Streets Celebration in May that the PSAL would next year begin the organization of both a freestyle and Greco-Roman season for high school wrestling in addition to the existing winter folkstyle season. Read more.

5/8/08: Weekly Update
Dear BTS Coaches, They say that success happens when hard work and preparation meet with opportunity. This adage can best explain our Fortress dual championships this past weekend, May 3, at Petrides high school. The event was great with excited coaches, wrestlers, and fans all having a great time! Congratulations to the A & B division dual champions, Lions Wrestling Club coached by Joe Diforte and IS 93, coached by Jeremy Schwartz, for their championship performance. Read more.

 

5/6//08: 2008 BTS MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS SLATED FOR HARLEM ARMORY SATURDAY, MAY 17.
On Saturday, May 17 the famous Harlem Armory will be the site of one of the largest middle school championships in the New York City area. Over 60 school programs and 600 area youth will be ready to compete for the ultimate prize, the 2008 BTS middle school championship title. Read more.

4/17/08:Goldstein, Haberli, Blythe, Conrade and Luce to be Honored at the Annual Beat the Streets Celebration at the Bowery Hotel
The Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. has announced it annual Award Winners that will be recognized at the Celebration Gala Event on May 20th, 6:30pm at the Bowery Hotel in lower Manhattan. Read more.
4/15/08: Team Fortis Tryouts Scheduled
The inaugural Beat the Streets "Team Fortis " ALL-STAR WRESTLING TEAM  tryouts will be held at Grand Street Campus on Saturday, April 19 at 12:00 noon. The wrestlers will go through a basic workout /clinic and then participate in wrestling scrimmages. All experienced wrestlers are welcome to tryout and coaches are encouraged to attend. Read more.

Dear BTS Coaches, The excitement of the season continues to mount as we march towards both our Fortress and novice season ending competitions. Of course both Fortress and novice teams are anticipating the season finale 2008 Middle School Championships being held at the famous Harlem Armory in Manhattan on Saturday May 17. This will be the largest middle school tournament of its kind held in NYC. Both Fortress and Novice Divisions will be competing in separate championships under the same roof. 4/1/08: The Road to Fargo Begins April 13th at the USA  Wrestling New York City Freestyle Qualifier
The  USA Wrestling National Jr. Championships attracts over 4000 of the top high school wrestlers in the country from 49 states.  It is the recruiting Mecca  for high school wrestlers and collegiate coaches. Read more.

3/24/2008 : Beat the Streets program announces 15 new high school wrestling teams in New York City for 2008-09
The BTS/PSAL Wrestling Commissioner has announced that 15 new high schools have been accepted by the PSAL to begin wrestling programs for the 2008-2009 Wrestling Season. Several other high schools have been extended invitations to join the new class of high schools to become involved in the "world's oldest and greatest sport of WRESTLING". Read More.

3/18/08: Fortress Wrestling League is launching on Wednesday, March 19 with 20 Middle School teams
For the first timein history, the Beat the Streets Wrestling Program has organized interschool competition for its 20 programs that began in 2005. Many of the teams involved have been developing their program for two years with several having been organized for 3 years. Read more.
3/10/08: Lenzi, New York State Champion and Morales All-State
Andrew Lenzi, Fordham Prep HS in the Bronx and a member of the CHSAA contingent, became the first New York City wrestler to win a New York State High School Wrestling Championship. He defeated Brian Benton of Amsterdam HS (Sec.2) in the finals 5-3. He became only the 3rd wrestling state champion from the CHSAA since 1963 . There are 26 teams statewide who participate in high school wrestling through the CHSAA Banner. Peter Morales, Grand Street Campus HS senior placed 5th place in the 112lbs. weight class at the 2008 New York State D1 Championships over the week-end in Rochester, NY. Read More.

New York City Wrestling On the Road to a State Championship
Thirty Five New York City Wrestlers will participate in the 2008 New York State HS Wrestling Championships in Rochester on Friday and Saturday.  Thirty PSAL Champions and 5 CHSAA Champions will be a part of the field of 240 wrestlers from all 13 Sections throughout New York State. Read More.
2/25/08: From "Rags to Riches:" D-League wrestling title points to Canarsie's revival
Canarsie outlasted every team the PSAL had to offer in a nearly 12-hour competition, clinching the league's developmental wrestling championship at Flushing HS on Feb. 10. Read More.

2/15/08: Enam Hasan Becomes the First Ever BTS Wrestler to Qualify for NY States
Enam Hasan of Baruch High School became the first ever Beat The Streets Wrestler to qualify for the New York State Division 2 Championship Tournament last weekend. Read more.

2/5/07: Beat the Streets Honors African American Wrestling Champions of the Past During Black History Month
Beat the Streets Wrestling would like to take this opportunity to honor the African American Wrestling Champions of the past during Black History Month. Included is a video of Kenny Monday, the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, describing what it was like growing up to wrestle as a black kid. You will also find information provided by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame about the African American Wrestling Experience, biographies of all African American NCAA Champions, Olympians, and Hall of Fame Members, and more. 2/4/08: Monsignor Farrell HS (CHSAA) Defends its Team Title Winning the Annual Mayors' Cup Wrestling Championships at the beautiful Harlem Armory in Manhattan on Superbowl Sunday!
This year's version of the Mayors Cup was expanded to allow every wrestling program in all 5 Boroughs to participate in the prestigious event. Read More.
1/31/08: Hofstra Clinic Wrap-up
Last weekend, Hofstra University Head Coach Tom Shifflet and his staff invited the Beat the Streets Wrestling program to the Hofstra University campus on Long Island and conducted a two hour clinic for 300 middle and high school wrestlers plus 25 of their coaches and parents. Following the clinic, the wrestlers visited the Campus Recreation Center and Cafeteria for lunch. Read more.
1/30/08: BTS Wrestlers Ready to Compete in Historic Harlem Armory
This Saturday, February 2, the Beat the Streets middle school wrestlers will compete at the historic 369th Harlem Armory Center in Manhattan. In so doing, they will become part of the rich tradition inherent in this historic building. Read More.

12/22/07: BTS Quartet Assist in Nazareth Tournament
The Paul Goddard Invitational at Nazareth Regional High School (Brooklyn) was held on Saturday December 22. At the tournament were a few familiar faces. In fact, there were a lot of familiar faces! In a joint effort to continue to expand, and improve the base and culture of NYC wrestling, four key Beat the Streets officials were present making a difference in our NYC youth. Read More.

12/21/07: BTS Wrestlers and Coaches are Invited to a Special Wrestling Clinic at Hofstra on January 27, 2008
Hofstra will be putting on a wrestling clinic held in conjunction with their dual meet with U Penn. The clinic features technique sessions with Hofstra Assistant Coach/ 2x NCAA Champ Joe Dubuque as well as opening remarks from Olympic Champ Doug Blubaugh. We will provide bus transportation for any BTS wrestlers/coaches who may want to participate in the clinic and observe the duals. Read More.

12/7/07: New Novice Wrestling Borough Format Attracts Greater Than Four Hundred Wrestlers
Due to the expansion of PSAL Wrestling, through the generosity of Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc., this year's Charles Glass Memorial Novice Wrestling Tournament took on a new format. The tournament was expanded to five individual borough tournaments. This event reached new heights hosting a record number of first year and/or prior season non varsity wrestlers. Read More.
12/3/07: Record-Breaking Turnout for the Soviet-Inspired Beat the Streets Wrestling Champions Clinic

12/3/07: Launching Inaugural Youth Program
The Beat the Streets Wrestling Program in conjunction with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation aims to launch a new youth wrestling program in Queens in early December. The program will be housed at the newly completed fitness area at Lost Battalion Hall Recreation Center. Read More.

11/20/07: NWCA East VS/ West ALL-Star Wrestling Match: Ruggirello and Griffin Both Win
In 2006, the National Wrestling Coaches Association's signature event, the All-Star Classic, was held in an area to help promote wrestling and kickstart more interest. In 2007, the All-Star Classic again had a vision in promoting wrestling, this time as an effort to showcase the sport at the University of Oregon and give support the movement to save the Oregon wrestling program which is set to be discontinued following the 2007-08 season. I just wanted to thank ALL coaches both BTS and our brothers at PSAL who contributed to make our Coaches College trainings and certification trainings such a huge and historic success. For the first time in NYC wrestling history we have both BTS middle school coaches and PSAL H.S. coaches under the same tent training for the same goal, To make NYC WRESTLING the best it can be! 10/30/07: The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! Russia to bring its #1 team to the NYAC International Open Championships
Alan Dudaev, 2005 World Champion at 60kg, will lead a talented Group of Russians at the Annual NYAC Holiday Championships scheduled Sat and Sunday November 17-18. The Russia Wrestling Federation will send 17 athletes to the NYAC Holiday Championships. Read More.

10/28/07: Northeast Duals Invites Beat the Streets Wrestling Teams
The Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. is Co-Sponsoring the Brute Northeast Duals with Journeymen Athletics Club from Niskayuna, New York. Frank Popolizio is an advocate of expanding wrestling in New York State and the United States at the College Level. The mission of the organization, a non-profit, is to expand college wrestling in New York State. We share in that mission! Read More.

10/19/07: Cliff Keen Products Provides a Generous Gift to the Beat the Streets Wrestling Program In New York City
Cliff Keen Products, Ann Arbor , Michigan has provided 1500 head guards for the Beat the Streets Wrestling Program in New York City. Jim Keen Sr. contacted the Beat the Streets Office in early September with the announcement that his company will provide the necessary head guards for all of the Beat the Streets programs. The Beat the Streets Developmental Training Program at Hunter College trains every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm-8pm. The Training program is opened to all high school wrestlers and coaches in New York City. There is no fee for the program.  Read More.

10/6/07: Beat the Streets Coaches College will Co-Sponsor with the Pinning Down Autism Coaches Clinic

9/21/07: BTS Mentor Julieta Okot Competes at the World Championships
Julieta Okot, Beat the Streets CHAMPS Coaching mentor for the new middle school programs, represented Bulgaria in the 48 kg weight class. Julieta has dual citizenship by recently becoming an American citizen last year. Read more.
9/20/07: New York City Trained Albanian Wins Bronze Medal
While the United States was winning the Greco-Roman Team Championships, a historic event, a young man from Albania, Sahit Prizeni, won the Bronze Medal in freestyle. He defeated Mike Zadick, USA in the first round of competition. Zadick was a Silver Medalist last year in Guanzhou, and had previously beaten Prizreni at the 2006 Schultz Memorial. Read more.

Anthony Schiano di Cola is now the face of New York City wrestling!  Anthony wrestles at MSIT/PSAL in Staten Island and is coached by Brendan Hayes. While winning the New York State Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship at the 2007 Empire State Games a photo was taken by Tony Rotundo of tech-fall.com and submitted to Amateur Wrestling News. The nations most prestigious amateur sports club, the New York Athletic Club, will be sending 5 wrestlers to represent the United States of America on the World Stage at the 2007 World Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Read more.

8/23/07: Wrestling Leader Tod Giles Has Passed Away
Tod Giles, an Olympic Alternate and Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, passed away last night.

Giles has been involved with the Beat the Streets Program by teaching new coaches both at the CHAMPS Training Center as well as for the certification of the Beat the Streets Coaches in March. Giles was an excellent role model for kids and coaches alike. Read more.

8/5/07: BTS Summer Wrestling Camp Update
New York City meets "Happy Valley" at the Ken Chertow Wrestling Camp in State College, PA making a visit to the Campus of Penn State University and touring their newly constructed Hall of Fame and Wrestling facilities. The inaugural Beat the Streets Summer Wrestling Camp Program was very successful as 175 wrestlers and coaches representing 18 Middle Schools and 13 High Schools from the public, parochial and public schools in New York City. Read more.

6/25/07: Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. Launches its Inaugural Summer Camp Program: DeCristo, Molnar, Goldberg, Jean and Cabezas Kick it Off
The Beat the Streets Summer Wrestling Camp Program kicked off its inaugural program with five high school wrestlers attending two of the sponsored camps with Matt Goldberg, Chris Jean and Ralph Cabezas all going into their senior year at Brooklyn Poly Prep joining the John Smith Intensive Camp Program at Cobleskill College in upstate New York. 6/13/07: New York City Wrestling Coaches Receive Inspirational Messages from Two Leaders
The New York City Wrestling Coaches from Youth to World Level were on hand at the 3rd Annual Beat the Streets Wrestling Awards Dinner at the New York Athletic Club listening to two of America's greatest leaders in their fields of endeavors. Mike Novogratz, Fortress Investment Group, Chairman of the Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. and J. Robinson, Head Coach, University of Minnesota. Both men shared their life experiences and the role that wrestling played impacting their journeys to the top of their professions. The theme of both speeches was directed to the coaches who provide the passion inspiring young men and women to aspire doing great things in their lives. Read more.

6/11/07: Beat the Streets Wrestling Update: Julieta Okot Places 3rd at Women's World Team Trials
Congratulations to Julieta Okot for her 3rd Place ranking with the United States Women's Wrestling Team.  Julieta finished 3rd in the 2007 World team trials in Las Vegas over the weekend. The ranking will qualify her for National Team Ranking and subsidy continuing her quest for a berth on the 2008 Women's Olympic Team. Read more.

6/4/07: Novogratz Honored as Outstanding American at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Induction
Michael E. Novogratz, Chairman of the Beat the Streets Wrestling, was honored as one of the Outstanding Americans in the United States for his Philanthropic work worldwide and as the Chairman of the Beat the Streets Wrestling Program in New York City. Read more.

5/25/07: Event Recap: Pinning Down Autism Takedown Tournament
I am thrilled to report that the first annual Staten Island takedown tournament and barbecue was a huge success! It was a sun drenched 70 degrees with a steady breeze, which made for ideal outdoor wrestling conditions! The parents set their beach chairs out mat-side and watched their kids while soaking up the sun and eating from the BBQ. The event ran from 9:30 to 2:30 and brought a festive summer kickoff atmosphere while raising thousands of dollars for Autism Speaks. Read more.

5/16/07: BTS Technique Clinic at IS 291 a Resounding Success
On Saturday, May 12 Beat the Streets hosted an all day technique clinic at Roland Hayes Intermediate School (IS 291) in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The clinicians were Mike Cigala of powerful IS 291, and Dr. Michael Spanokos of Beat the Streets. Additional assistance was given by Chris Poli of Baruch Middle School.

 

5/11/07: Yero Washington Clinic at Hunter College
Yero Washington, a two time NCAA Division One All-American and assistant Coach at Columbia University, demonstrated and reinforced several of the basic skills at Wednesday's Developmental Training Center at Hunter College. Yero, is a product of the California USA Wrestling program, where a major emphasis was developed in the late 1970's introducing the national system statewide.

 

5/8/07: NCAA Champion Glenn Pritzlaff This Week's Featured Clinician; BTS Wrestlers Qualify for Junior Nationals at the NY State Freestyle/Greco Tournament
Coming off their best performance in the 34 year history of the New York State Freestyle and Greco Roman Championships, New York City wrestling is continuing with its mission to compete in the top tier of NYS High School Wrestling by 2012 with its post season training sessions.

 
5/2/07: Princeton Head Coach Chris Ayres Helps BTS Wrestlers Prepare for New York State Tournament
Coach Chris Ayers, Princeton University, was on hand last evening to put the final touches on the preparation for many of the wrestlers who will be entering the 35th Annual New York State Freestyle and Greco Roman Jr. and Cadet Championships on Sat. May 5th in Binghamton. Chris taught one of the most effective freestyle techniques from the top position: the cross ankle lace.
 
4/29/07: First Inaugural NYC Middle School Wrestling Championships
April 28th marked the first time a city-wide wrestling championship was held for middle school athletes. The tournament, hosted at Hunter College, featured over a dozen teams of 6th through 8th graders, who contested City titles in 24 different weight categories.
 

3/22/07: Roosevelt Island Middle School hosted a Dual Meet with Baruch Middle School on Wednesday, March 21st, 2007
Roosevelt Island MS beginning its second year with Coach Corey Luce and Baruch MS is in its third year under the leadership of Coach Chris Poli. The second year programs will be launching intramural competition after spending Year One developing and learning the Basic Skills of Wrestling.

 

4/9/07: Beat the Streets at the Michael J. Petrides School
Petrides middle school students signed up en masse last year and the popularity has carried over to this year. Parents especially appreciate the Beat the Streets program providing all the equipment, mat and coaching stipends at Petrides.

 

3/22/07: Lori Rose Benson Wins Channing Mann Award as Nation's Outstanding Physical Education Administrator
Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today congratulated Department of Education Director of Fitness and Physical Education Lori Rose Benson for winning the National Association for Sport and Physical Education's 2007 Channing Mann Award, identifying her as the nation's outstanding physical education administrator. Presented annually by NASPE, the award is the organization's highest honor for physical education administrators and recognizes outstanding leadership and innovation in the field of physical education.

 

3/7/07: Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc announces restructuring; National Champion Morrison to lead expanded effort
NCAA Champion Dean Morrison has been hired by Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. to lead the continued growth of the sport of wrestling in New York City. Because of the unprecedented growth of the organization, whose mission it is to raise the profile of the sport of Wrestling in New York City, Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. has reorganized its professional staff by making some internal structural changes by securing an additional person in Dean Morrison as its full time Chief Executive charged to oversee and direct the scope of the entire Beat the Streets Wrestling Program.

 

2/6/07: Novogratz elected as Outstanding American by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
STILLWATER , OKLA. - Michael E. Novogratz of New York , N.Y. has been elected to the Hall of Outstanding Americans by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. Novogratz will be inducted, along with other special award winners and the Class of 2007 Distinguished Members, at the 2007 Honors Weekend Banquet and Induction Ceremony June 2, 2007 in Stillwater , Okla.

 

2/26/07: Petrides wrestling fans backed their team like champs
Four bus loads of students, parents and teachers from the Sunnyside school were into it and kept it clean. No matter who won yesterday's PSAL City Wrestling Championship between Petrides and Grand Street Campus, half of the packed gym at Herbert H. Lehman HS was going home disappointed. Both schools came out with full force to support their teams, forming a standing-room-only crowd and a unique buzz not always found at the high school level.

 

10/3/06: Beat The Streets Wrestling Day 2006
As it has been since we began the journey of building the USAW/MWA Beat the Streets last January with one program and 28 kids, it has been a year of wonderful surprises. Yesterday was yet another one! In organizing Wrestling Day, we wanted to bring together all the "parts" of the initiative expanding the base of wrestling in the New York City metropolitan area to Baruch Middle School, the home of the site of the inaugural program that was established in 2004-05!
